Gone to Gozo

Gozo, Malta

Wow, Cap'n.  We're world travelers.  I mean, look at us.  We were in Thailand, and POOF! Now we are in Malta.

I know. Spike, how did we get here so fast?  I don't even feel any jet lag.

Anyway, we visited Gozo, a small island that is part of the country of Malta, in the Mediterranean.  There is such a varied history in the country.

But what did we see?  I mean I remember lots of rocks and a ferry to get there....

The highlight was the neolithic temples of Ggantija which are

Hey, you spelled that wrong.  There are too many G's at the beginning.

Quit interrupting.  No, I spelled it right. These temples are from 3600BC, which makes them older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids..  But no one really knows what they were used for.  Based on the statues that represent fertility, the temples might have been the site for a ceremony for a fertility rite.

I like the skull.  Did pirates cut off someone's head?

No.  This skull was found at the temples, and is now on display at the museum here.

Is that all there was on Gozo?

No, we went all over the island for the day.  We saw the rocky beach and the Tower from the Knights of Malta, and the Inland Sea.  These are all highlights to visit.

The Inland Sea sounds really cool.  How can a sea be in the middle of an island?

It's not really inland.  It is just surrounded by cliffs.  There is a cave passage that goes to the open ocean.  This is a popular area for scuba divers to learn how to dive, as well as a protected beach.

If anyone is ever in the Mediterranean area, we recommend Gozo. The weather was perfect, and there is a lot to see and do!
