Lumphini Park, Bangkok

Captain here, wanting to tell you about our latest adventure.

Spike and I took a long walk today through Lumphini Park. This park has an almost 100 year history, beginning with King Rama VI in 1925 until now. We found this beautiful green space in the heart of Bangkok to be quite peaceful.

Why Lumphini?

Because Buddha's birthplace is Lumbini, Nepal.

Well, it could have been named the Thai words for "BIG PARK." To understand its size, it takes up 147 acres of land, with plenty of canals and two lakes with plenty of space for pedal boating! Being unable to swim, Captain decided not to indulge in a boat ride.

While the swimming part is true, be aware that dogs aren't allowed in the park so Spike was breaking the rules as we wandered about. Now, as we walked through the park, we met quite a number of joggers, cyclists, and other walkers. Exercising is quite popular at the park, with numerous weight lifting, stretching, and exercise stations throughout the park.

This is also a great gathering place with numerous pavilions. Bangkok has its own version of Sunday in the Park (but not on Sundays) with the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra! Other places can be rented by the public for special occasions. If it's just your family, go ahead and take advantage of the well-placed picnic tables and benches for a nice lunch or snack!

Throughout the park, you will find some beautiful artwork too. Can you read a sundial? We found two different ones, but neither of us could tell the time.

Sagittarius, named because King Rama IX's birthday was in December, shows the signs of the zodiac. There were several other statues, including one of the King at the main entrance.

And that's an important point. There are multiple entrances to the park. One is near the BTS metro, but others are not a quick walk to the station. Keep this in mind for transportation when you leave the park.

There is one other thing to remember: Don't Feed the Pigeon. (Sorry Mo Willems...the pigeon cannot eat at Lumphini Park.)
